Nvidia’s Project Logan Will Bring Console Graphics to Your Phone

Siggraph is the annual conference for computer graphics. This past week it was held in Anaheim and Nvidia, the leader in GPU manufacturing, showed off some incredible technology.

“Project Logan” is the name of its next-gen processor and will be shipping in mobile phones beginning in the fist half of 2014. This new processor houses an on-board GPU based on Nvidia’s Kepler architecture – the world’s fastest high performance computing (HPC) architecture – that reportedly is 1.6 times more powerful than the PS3. In addition, Nvidia claims it is more efficient than the iPad 4, using one-third the power.

Big players in the game development community are taking notice, including Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney, who had this to say about Project Logan on Unreal Engine 4:

he big news here is Nvidia’s support for the OpenGL 4.3 feature set, which brings to mobile devices the same high-end graphics hardware capabilities exposed via DirectX 11 on PC games and on next-generation consoles… More than ever before, we see the opportunity for developers to create high-end games and ship them across multiple platforms on a wide variety of devices, including tablet, smartphone, Windows, Mac, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One…

Nvidia showed an impressive demo at Siggraph that you can see below. The demo is running on a reference tablet drawing 2-3 watts.
