Many in the games community find the nomination of Madden NFL 18 to be an odd choice, despite the great production value that the game upheld. This year’s Madden contained a story-focused mode called The Longshot, which featured Oscar-winning actor Mahershala Ali. The story details the tumultuous journey that a promising football player embarks on in the hopes of entering the NFL.

Any game that was released between December 1, 2016 to November 30, 2017 and contained credited writers who had already applied to be a member of the WGA Video Game Writers Caucus was eligible for the Outstanding Achievement in Video Game Writing award.

The winner of the award will be announced on Sunday, February 11, at concurrent ceremonies taking place in New York City and Los Angeles. The voting panel is comprised of both predominant video game writers and Writers Guild members.
