Noct: A 2D Survival Horror Experience Enters Kickstarter and Steam Greenlight

Indie game developer and freelance artist based in Toronto, Canada Chris Eskins (c3sk) has launched his top down 2D Survival Horror game project Noct and looking for support via Kickstarter and Steam Greenlight. The goal has been set in order to help out with the development of this Lovecraft-inspired twin-stick shooter, which is a goal of $22,000 CAD and it will be releasing on Windows, OS X, and with the recent addition of Linux. There is also a target release date of mid-2015, with a projected alpha testing on October 31st.

The Kickstarter campaign starts out with the saying “Explore a ruined world filled with ancient nightmarish creatures from a time long forgotten.” In Noct, players will have to give it their all in order to survive in the only life they have, in a desolate and terror based landscape, that takes place in a post-apocalyptic world, and it will have you visually playing through a high contrast thermal imaging satellite. Though you won’t have to survive alone, players will be able to connect to, or host their own world servers where they can adventure in, along with playing with other survivors in Noct if they want. Find weapons, rations, utility items, and other items that will help you survive in this multiplayer survival horror action adventure game.

Back on August 11th, Noct made its way onto Steam Greenlight and has met 40% of its goal, with the success and support is had gotten on Steam Greenlight, c3sk than looked to Kickstarter to back the game, on August 25th. Pledges that are made for $5 will go towards receiving the full digital soundtrack to the game, then pledges go up in rewards with the maximum amount leading up to $1,500 CAD.

Players will need to do the following:

  • Survive Noct by maintaining your three key vital systems while you explore. Find unique weapons and items to increase your chances of survival against the elements and unknown horrors awaiting you.
  • Find other survivors in multiplayer procedurally generated worlds, or journey solo and on your own terms.
  • Explore vast wastelands of relentless carnage, destroyed and ruined cities, and treacherous, claustrophobic environments, all rendered in a unique art style utilizing a high contrast thermal camera viewpoint of the world.
  • Destroy and annihilate your way through multitudes of unique and highly dangerous monsters found inhabiting the landscape, each with their own frightening presence and set of terrifying abilities.

The core mechanics that you will experience in Noct, include the following:

  • Unique Line of Sight System – You see only what is within your actual awareness area. You can see down every hallway around you, but not around the corners.
  • Weapons – With abominations eating everything around you, anything you can get your hands on is a weapon. From fully automatic squad weapons to the reliable board with a nail in it, keep them maintained and they may just keep you alive. Different locations may yield higher grade weapons.
  • Terrifying Monsters – You will encounter horrific creatures that exist solely to hunt and eat you. Procedurally generated throughout the world, no one location encounter will be the same. Different locations may also yield more deadly and dangerous foes for you to face… or to flee from, screaming and flailing in fear.
  • Special Utility Items – Specialized items help lower your risk as you advance through areas. Some may be super effective on certain types of bosses.
  • Hardcore Survival – You have one life. Your one chance of survival depends upon your evaluation of the risks involved in certain situations before committing to actions. Lose that life, and you will have to start over again.
