Nintendo To Hold Pokemon Direct Tomorrow, Possibly for Generation 8

After the massive success of its spinoff remakes, Pokemon Let’s Go! Pikachu and Eevee, Nintendo is looking towards the series’ core RPG entries as a way to jumpstart the Switch’s sales once again, this time capturing the more hardcore Pokemon fans. For a week now, the official Pokemon channel has been releasing a video each day highlighting the regions of past games, the first being Gen 1’s Johto region. This culminated in today’s video, an overview of Sun and Moon’s Aloha region, before Nintendo dropped the news that there will be a special Pokemon Direct tomorrow.

The timing of these videos suggests that a brand-new region, and consequently a new generation, will be unveiled tomorrow. Appropriately, tomorrow is also Pokemon Day, celebrated on February 27 as the day the first Pokemon games released in Japan, launching a worldwide phenomenon that is still going strong to this day, 23 years later. There are no concrete details announced beyond the Direct itself, but the illustration attached shows a picture of three Pokeballs, which seems to suggest further that Generation 8 will be revealed with three new starter Pokemon.

According to the announcement tweet, the Direct will focus on Pokemon and last approximately seven minutes long, which is much shorter than the company’s usual presentations. As such, it is unlikely much gameplay or mechanics will be revealed; a brief introduction, a showcase of the starter Pokemon’s designs, and logo drops are likely all they’ll show given the limits on time.

The Pokemon Direct will be livestreamed tomorrow, February 27, 2019 at 6am PT/9am ET. The stream can be found on Nintendo’s website, or its Youtube channel.
