Night School Announces OXENFREE Release For PS4 With New Areas, New Endings, And New Stories

For those who have been living under a rock the past couple of month, OXENFREE is an indie horror/exploring game centered around themes such as relationships (be they friendly, rocky, tremulous, or venomous), adolescence, loss, radios, and ghosts. The game opened back in January to an astounding amount of critical acclaim, with reviewers raving over the game’s well-written story, dialogue, art, music, and overall uniqueness. In short, OXENFREE was a very fun, very frightening breath of fresh air.

The game was originally released for PC on Steam, and was quickly given a release for the Xbox One, with the promise of a Playstation 4 version merely a whisper on the wind–a whisper that developers at Nighschoolers themselves did promise. No exact date was specified, however.

Until today.

Night School Studios and Sony simultaneously announced a very speacial version of OXENFREE for the Playstation 4.

And fans are pretty much jumping up and down with anticipation. The demand has been high, and it is finally happening.

Night School teased the announcement last night via their twitter, allurding to a huge surprise being revelaed today.

Players will use DualShock 4’s speaker and light bar to toggle Alex’s handheld radio, much like other controlers.

The Playstation 4 release is more than just a rehashing of the same old content for a different console, or a boost in sound and grpahics. The PS4 release means a new story (meaning more script, meaning more dailogue, meaning more delving into the complicated web of teenage relationships), new areas for exploring (probably new items), and (undenibly the most exciting news of all) different endings. Anyone who plays the game knows that there a multiple different way the game could end dpending on your relationship status with all of the characters around you….IF everyone made it to the end…

This new release with new content give developers a chance to fix or alter a few of the game’s downsides–such as long stretches of travel time without any dialogue or in-between…or running shoes, ala Pokemon Ruby and Saphire.

OXENFREE will be out for the Playstation 4 on upcoming May 31st. Sorry Vita fans, no word yet.

Happy playing!
