NieR: Automata Surpasses 4 Million Units in Sales Globally

Yesterday, Square Enix announced that their action RPG NieR: Automata has shipped and sold digitally an astounding four million units globally since its release in early 2017. The game was developed by Platinum Games and features their signature fast paced combat and comes from the creative mind of Yoko Taro.

The game itself is about androids trying to retake Earth after it has become a machine based dystopia, and is widely known for its unique form of storytelling featuring numerous different endings for the game. It even requires players to reach at least five of these endings to see the entire story.

The game probably benefited from of having a staggered release across multiple platforms. The game originally released exclusively on the PlayStation 4 and PC in early 2017. Then, in June of last year, the game released on Xbox One as  NieR: Automata BECOME AS GODS Edition which enhaced the game with 4k and HDR support. Then in February of this year, Square Enix released another new edition of the game titled NieR: Automata Game of the YoRHa Edition which came with the Machine Mask Accessory, the, absurdly named, 3C3C1D119440927 expansion, and five pod designs in addition to the game.

With this sales success as well as being critically acclaimed across the board, it wouldn’t be surprising if Square Enix, Yoko Taro, and Platinum Games are already hard at work on a sequel. With Square Enix having an E3 press conference next month, fans may get tease of a new game in the series at the event. If not, RPG fans will be getting a look at the Final Fantasy VII Remake next month after it was finally shown again recently after over four years in silence.

Avid believer that video games present the best storytelling opportunities out of any media, and that needs to be conveyed. Former competitive Pokemon player.
