NieR Automata Has Now Sold 6.5 Million Units

Nintendo has unleashed their Direct Mini which focused on some major third-party publishers and some of their IP’s. One of these was Square Enix’s NieR Automata, which was one of 2017’s most critically acclaimed titles. It was announced during the event that NieR Automata, or more specifically, NieR Automata The End of YoRHa Edition, will be coming to the Nintendo Switch on October 6. Right on cue, and to celebrate this occasion, Square Enix announced that NieR Automata has now sold 6.5 million units worldwide since it launched in 2017.

Square Enix made the announcement on their official site, albeit only on the Japanese version. The post, which is shown on the bottom left of the main page, translates roughly to “22.06.28 Cumulative worldwide shipments and downloads exceeded 6.5 million units.” This will more than likely be part of the company’s overall celebration for the title, which has now in its 5th year of existence. The title was initially released for the PlayStation 4 on February 23, 2017, with a North American release coming on March 7 and the rest of the world on March 10. The title would also make its way to the PC platform through Steam on March 17.

Within that small time span, NieR Automata was an immediate hit and quickly circulated around the video game community as a serious Game of the Year contender. It was ported to the Xbox One a year later on June 26, 2018, where it became even more accessible thanks to Microsoft’s Game Pass where it was made available for a time. Now that it will grace the Nintendo Switch, and those lifetime numbers will more than likely increase exponentially. With a plethora of different play styles and various endings, Switch owners are in for a wild ride with NieR Automata when it comes to the system on October 6.
