A new trailer for the upcoming action RPG Vampyr has been leaked ahead of E3. The new trailer teases the story of the game’s protagonist, Jonathan Reid. The main character is a military surgeon who has been transformed into a vampire who must adapt and survive. The new trailer shows off the game’s setting of a stylized 20th century London as well, in all its gray atmosphere, cobblestone roads, narrow, dark alley ways, and dense fog. Especially its fog. The trailer also shows a bit of the game’s combat and a lot of the stylized blood splatter that comes along with it.
A concept trailer for the game was released last year. The description for the concept trailer goes into detail as to the concept of the game. The game works on a choice based story line, where the player is free to interact with the varied cast of characters who are inhabiting the city, as well as having to deal with other super natural creatures and those who want to hunt down the vampire. The player will at some point need to quench their vampiric thirst. The more human blood the player consumes the more abilities they unlock and the stronger they become, but they must choose carefully who they seduce and feast upon as well as how they do it. Every character can become a potential victim for the player to choose. The deaths of characters remove them from the story entirely and may have either positive or negative impacts on how the story unfolds for Dr. Reid. This mechanic puts the player into an interesting position, forcing them to survive and become strategic. They must not only consider the bloodlust of the protagonist but also how their choice of victim will ripple throughout London and ultimately if it will help or hurt them in the long run.
In the same concept trailer description, it is mentioned how the vampiric abilities will be based on using one’s own blood. Again providing the player with a choice of an edge in battle at the consequence of becoming more vulnerable. It is also brought up that the player will be able to improve upon and craft a variety of ranged as well as melee weapons in a crafting system they refer to as “deep”. This is accomplished by finding material looted from corpses.
Vampyr is developed by DontNod Entertainment who are responsible for such games as Life is Strange and Remember me. Vampyr will also be running in the Unreal 4 engine. Vampyr is set for a 2017 release date where it will be made available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
