New Report Estimates PlayStation 5 Sold 3.4 Million Units In Its First 4 Weeks

The PlayStation 5 has been extremely popular and has done very well for Sony. It had the biggest launch month in U.S. history, was the biggest console launch in the UK, and sold more than 118,000 units in Japan in its first 4 days. Now, new report suggests that Sony has broken another record. According to a Digitimes report citing “industry sources”, PlayStation 5 shipped 3.4 million units in its first four weeks of sales, the highest ever for a PlayStation console.

To put things in perspective, it took 6 weeks for the PlayStation 4 to sell 4.2 million units. As of December 20, a total of 242,000 PlayStation 5 units have been sold according to Famitsu. Things probably won’t slow down either, as everyone tries to get their hands on a PS5 when they eventually become available; however, as soon as it is, it becomes sold out almost immediately. The report also says that Sony is planning to reach 16.8 million to 18 million units in 2021 with the help of additional capacity support from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company and backend service firms. AMD, which produces PlayStation 5’s customized 7nm CPU has also secured additional foundry capacity from Taiwan Manufacturing Company. This means that it will help ramp up console output so Sony can reach their targeted goal.

Another reason that things may not slow down for Sony and PlayStation 5 next year is the lineup. Gran Turismo 7, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and Returnal are coming in the first half of 2021. Last month, it was revealed at The Game Awards that Returnal will be launching in March next year, which is one of the only concrete dates we have. We also know that Horizon Forbidden West will be launching in the second half of 2021. The sequel to 2018’s God of War was also announced for 2021. Plus, there are some third-party PlayStation titles that we know are coming too. After getting delayedDeathloop will be releasing in May 2021Ghostwire: Tokyo is also coming out next year but no release date or window has been revealed yet.
