My Hero Academia: One’s Justice Gets Gameplay and Trailer Premiere at Jump Festa ’18

Jump Festa ’18 has already commenced over in Japan, and as promised, more has been revealed about the upcoming My Hero Academia game, One’s Justice. During the expo, eager fans were treated to both a trailer, as well as gameplay. As a fair warning, the trailer has spoilers pertaining to season 2 of My Hero Academia, so tread with caution.

The gameplay, while limited to showing off one stage, two characters, and nothing relative to a HUD, still has some key things to highlight. The general combat seems to borrow from arena fighting games, giving the player a 3D fighting experience extremely similar to J-Stars Victory VS+, as opposed to a 2D fighting game like Street Fighter. The overall game footage features main character Izuku Midoriya and fellow student Katsuki Bakugo (which also confirms the next character for the game) brawling in the middle of a city street.

Both fighters get an equal amount of focus on their movement, combos, and special moves. Destructible environments are also present in the gameplay footage, with the streets becoming cracked, buildings getting partially destroyed, and street signs and railings breaking when characters are sent flying into them from throws, combos, or special moves. There are even some sections where both fighters combat each other on the side of a building. There also are comic/manga-inspired onomatopoeias that occur when environments are destroyed, special moves are used, or when a fighter guards another’s move.

The actual trailer contains Izuku Midoriya and Tomura Shigaraki fighting in a pre-rendered cutscene similar to the stage used in the gameplay. The trailer is short, and with nothing extra special to be revealed. However, My Hero Academia: One’s Justice will be running on the Unreal Engine, will be available on the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch sometime in 2018, and has not yet been rated by CERO, the Japanese equivalent to the ESRB. More fighters, stages, and game information should come forward steadily starting in 2018, so get ready!
