Square Enix Collective and Kitfox Games, together, announced plans to launch a Kickstarter for their pixelated mystical RPG Moon Hunters. A total of $45,000 is the goal to get the open-world adventure off the ground. A poll on the game’s page on the Square Enix Collective website reads that 83 percent of respondents would, in fact, support the project through crowdfunding, such as Kickstarter.
The journey for Kitfox Games and Moon Hunters, even to the funding phase, was not one without any obstacles. Kitfox Games and their project were vetted by the afformentioned Collective platform. Collective assesses developers and their games and allows their community to ultimately decide if these games are continued or not by Square Enix. This process is fairly similar to Valve’s Steam platform’s Greenlight program.
Tanya Short, designer of Moon Hunters, spoke on the collaboration with Square Enix Collective:
The team is really eager to show off what we’ve been working on and get more input from the community. Collective has helped us find our audience for a mythology-building RPG, getting the word out about this beautiful game we’re trying to make.
Moon Hunters involves up to four players –single player is available– solving mythical mysteries and fighting enemies along the way. According to the game’s Square Enix Collective page, the game’s world is randomly generated and the art style consists of hand-painted pixel art. A multitude of ancient myth and lore is offered to any who are willing to immerse themselves into Moon Hunters.
Moon Hunters is, quite appropriately, about the power of the Moon failing to rise for the land of Mercuria. This absence of the Moon causes conundrum and creates the presence of malevolent monsters. “Chosen children of the Moon” band together to solve the crisis. Protagonists specialize in either melee or long-range attacks, and have specific elemental alignments.
Project Lead at Collective, Phil Elliott, said Collective is happy to support Kitfox Games in their venture.
Moon Hunters caught my eye very early on with its great visual style and design bursting with personality – and gamers echoed that with strong support during the game’s feedback campaign.
