Australian developer Monomyth Games has announced Photo Roboto: A Timesnap Adventure, cozy photography adventure built around a camera that can shoot the past, present, and future, coming to PC via Steam in 2027. An announcement trailer accompanied the reveal.
Players step into the role of Peppino, a small robot determined to earn his Timewarp Camera License and become a master photographer. Teaming up with his friends Sophia and Marco, he opens a photography business on the Italian island of Pallacanezza. To keep his star rating high, Peppino runs, jumps, and boats across the island to complete various freelance photo gigs. Pallacanezza is populated by more than 100 human and robotic characters, many of whom have problems that require a creative eye and a camera to solve. The upbeat island life comes to a sudden halt, however, when the mayor locks everything down over a mysterious “Curse.” Uncovering the truth behind this curse and reopening the island ahead of the summer tourist season serves as the driving force of the game’s story.
With the Timewarp Camera, players can swap lenses, frame the perfect shot, and shift moments through time. As they progress, collecting new lenses unlocks additional abilities and unique camera modes to experiment with. When they aren’t snapping photos, there’s plenty of time to explore the island’s distinct districts at their own pace, from ancient Roman ruins and scenic trails to hidden coves and sandy beaches. Any money earned from their gigs can be spent customizing their storefront with new signs and fixtures, or giving Peppino a personal touch with a fresh coat of paint and some fun accessories.
Photo Roboto marks a striking pivot for Monomyth Games. The indie studio debuted in 2018 with Need to Know, mass-surveillance thriller that drew international attention and even earned a nod from whistleblower Edward Snowden. Releasing eight years later, this new project trades heavy political simulation for a warm, colorful atmosphere. Co-founder Tristram Geary noted that this dramatic shift in tone, genre, and gameplay required the team to completely rebuild their design approach.
