Near the end of 2020, 4A Games stated that they were planning on giving their 2019 title, Metro Exodus, the next-gen treatment at some point in 2021. True to their word, the upgrade is still planned for release this year. However, 4A isn’t just resting on a new visual look though, as they’ve also announced that the upgrade will also be applied to the PC version as well, giving it the new title of Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition. This new iteration will include advanced ray tracing reflections, and full support for deep learning super sampling 2.0 (DLSS).
In their post, 4A Games charts the differences between the PlayStation 5/Xbox Series X, Series S, and the new PC versions. Almost everything matches up, with the exception of the aforementioned advanced ray tracing reflections and support for DLSS 2.0. Of course, in order to achieve this, you’ll have to have a compatible graphics card as well as a fairly powerful processor to boot. If that wasn’t enough, 4A Games also announced that everyone who already owns Metro Exodus on PC will be able to get this new enhanced edition for free. Due to the major changes in this new version, it will be considered as a separate title. This means that you’ll have to go into your respective game library and add it in yourself.
As for the consoles, both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will run at 4K native resolution with 60 frames per second, while the Series S will run at 1080p. All versions will use ray-traced lighting as well as having reduced loading times thanks to the Solid State Drives (SSD) that both systems use. The studio also mentioned that each system will be able to use their own respective mechanic for the game such as the PlayStation 5 DualSense controller’s haptic feedback and the Xbox Series X/Series S spatial audio system. Current owners of the game will get the upgrade for free, just like the PC owners, and the Xbox version will use Smart Delivery.
Finally, 4A also announced that Metro Exodus will launch for both Mac and Linux software, with the former slated for a March release. No date was given for the Linux iteration. Metro Exodus PC Enhanced Edition will launch this Spring for PC through Steam, the Epic Games Store, and GOG. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/Series S versions will launch sometime this year.
