Epic Games’ Fortnite’s constant quest to feature a character from every property under the Sun continues, this time pulling from the timeless classic Konami series Metal Gear Solid. Come Fortnite version 28.10 you can play as both Solid Snake as well as Raiden from Metal Gear Solid as well as several other goodies from the tactical espionage series as detailed here.
The game features Solid Snake, optionally equipped with infrared goggles he used at the beginning of Metal Gear Solid 1, and Raiden, optionally equipped with the underwater rebreather mask he used at the beginning of Metal Gear Solid 2. Funnily enough, the version of Raiden featured in Fortnite is specifically the Metal Gear Solid 2 version, and not the infinitely memed Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance version, a decision that many fans might scratch their heads at but many MGS purists will likely prefer.
It’s always an exciting event when new characters come to Fortnite, it’s just sort of surreal to see video game icons like Solid Snake shoot at Goku or Peter Griffin, but this activity could indicate more. The Metal Gear series as a whole has been pretty dormant since Metal Gear Survive, arguably since Metal Gear Solid 5. MGS fans will take any sort of activity as a sign of life from the series, and that maybe Konami will dust off the franchise for one last spin. Fans will question whether or not they want a non-Kojima spin on the franchise, though Kojima was only tangentially related to Platinum Games’ Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, a game many people still celebrate to this day.
Regardless, it’s good to see Snake and Raiden out and about for the first time in what feels like a lifetime. If you want to meet up with these old friends again then be sure to play the latest patch of Fortnite and get these skins for yourself.
