Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes Achieves 1 million Copies Sold

Kojima Productions’ stealth action game Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes has surpassed 1 million in copies sold, according to an announcement by publisher Konami.

The milestone comes despite an outcry from many gamers that the $30 game only contained a couple hours of gameplay. Ground Zeroes is not a full-fledged title in the Metal Gear Solid series, but a prelude to a much larger game on the horizon, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

Note that the 1 million figure refers to the number of physical copies sent to retailers around the world, and does not account for digital sales, which are available for all four Xbox and PlayStation systems. The actual number is therefore significantly higher.

In celebration of this sales milestone, Konami has announced an upcoming patch and game update for Ground Zeroes. The game update is arriving on May 1 and will unlock access to missions that were exclusive to the Xbox and PlayStation platforms. Details on the patch’s release date and fixes, however, are scant.

Upon release, players on all platforms will have access to the Deja Vu and Jamais Vu missions. The former, originally exclusive to PlayStation systems, brings players back to a recreation of the Shadow Moses island setting from the first Metal Gear Solid. Players are rewarded for recreating moments from the original game with flashbacks, and successful completion of the mission will unlock a playable version of the original PS1 Solid Snake in all his low-polygon glory.

The other mission, the formerly Xbox-exclusive Jamais Vu, has players take control of Raiden, Metal Gear Solid 2‘s controversial protagonist, albeit in his more popular cyborg ninja form. The mission is heavily influenced by Snatcher, a 1988 cyberpunk graphic adventure game for the NEC PC-8801 and MSX2 that was designed by Hideo Kojima.

Ground Zeroes was released on March 18  for the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3 and PS4. Although physical versions costed $30, players can shave off $20 by buying digitally. Its upcoming successor, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, is said to be hundreds of times larger in scope and will feature non-linear gameplay. A release date is currently unknown.
