Media Molecule has announced it’ll be ending support for Dreams later this year. From an update shared on their website Media Molecule devs write, “As we continue to evaluate and evolve our priorities for the studio and Dreams, we’ve made the difficult decision to discontinue live support for Dreams after September 1, 2023, to shift our focus to an exciting new project. You’ll continue to be able to play, create and share Dreams with others after September, but we won’t be releasing any more updates to the game or events such as DreamsCom, All Hallows’ Dreams or the Impy Awards.”
Between now and September 1st, Media Molecule will still support the title with minor updates in preparation for ending any updates on the game entirely. As well, Media Molecule says that they’ll be migrating the servers by late May, while acknowledging that some changes will come with the migration. Due to the server migration Dreams players will have a storage limit of 5GB, whereas existing accounts do not count towards the limit. This of course can be photos, creations and versions that players use within Dreams.
While the news came unexpected, Media Molecule did reveal what they have coming next from the studio stating, “Media Molecule will continue to work on bringing joyful, playful, innovative experiences to players around the world. We’re currently working on a new project that we’re not ready to talk about at this stage, but stay tuned for more information in the future.”
Dreams released exclusively on PlayStation 4 in February 2020. Despite being praised by reviewers for its extraordinary level of creativity, the game never really caught on. Occasionally an incredible creation from Dreams will pop up online and stun literally everyone. Media Molecule is more recognized for their acclaimed Little Big Planet franchise which was its own level of creativity not seen in any game at the time. Little Big Planet also brought us one of PlayStation’s iconic mascots, the adorable, Sackboy.
