Capcom remains a titan of the industry, with a new highly anticipated release so close in Dragon’s Dogma 2, it can be easy to forget that Capcom has another game in the works for a future release in Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess. But after watching this trailer, it’s guaranteed that you won’t soon forget it.
In the trailer, we witness the absolutely gorgeous artstyle of Kunitsu-Gami, with our main character slicing through incredibly detailed and disturbing enemies and traversing colorful and trippy environments, even cutting a path through intertwined ghost flowers to guide the maiden through the map. Beyond how beautiful the game looks however, we get details on the gameplay. From what we can glean here it seems that the game is divided into day and night cycles.
During the day, you accrue resources to bolster the defenses of a village with villagers taking on various combat and support roles to defend a priestess. When night comes, various deformed yokai flood the village and you engage in a fascinating mix of tactical and action gameplay, directing your villagers attacks while also controlling the main character, Soh, in his own right. For those interested, there’s also a gameplay deep dive for Kunitsu-Gami which goes into more detail.
The detailed breakdown gives far more insight into how the game plays than I can cover in this short article, but suffice it to say the ideas are innovative. A blend of action and strategy gameplay, with decisions made both before the actual fight as well as on the fly as chaos is happening make for an interesting concept, and to be honest the gaming industry needs more creative ideas like this so we’re more than happy to see Kunitsu-Gami show so much potential. It helps that the gameplay looks extremely smooth to compliment the beautiful artstyle.
If you’re as excited about Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess as I am then be sure to keep an ear to the ground as Capcom announces release dates. As far as we know, Kunitsu-Gami is set for release sometime in 2024 for the Xbox Series X|S, Playstation 5, and PC via Steam.
