E3 2021 is only a couple of months away and we already have a whose who of well known studios and companies ready to participate. The previous year had no event due to the world wide effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic, and this year’s event will be a digital one as opposed to an in-person one for the same reason. Unfortunately, not everyone will be there, a point that was emphasized when Konami announced that they will not be at this year’s E3.
Perhaps the even more interesting aspect of this announcement is that Konami stated “we are in deep development on a number of key projects, so please stay tuned for some updates in the coming months.” This is quite intriguing as Konami has essentially been very quiet when it comes to the development of new titles. Despite that, we did get a brief glimpse of Eden Zero which debuted at the Tokyo Game Show last year. The company also announced that they would be entering the PC gaming desktop business and released the TurboGrafx-16 Mini in the same year.
Ever since the very public break up between Konami and Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima, the company has done very little with actual video game development. In following years, they’ve been focused on re-releasing their classic titles in compilations, new pachinko machines in their native Japan, and new YU-GI-OH cards that release every single month of the year. Regardless, it’s still possible that they’ll announce some new titles in the months after E3, although what they’re currently working on is anyone’s guess.
As we already mentioned, E3 2021 will have numerous participants this year. This includes major companies such as Nintendo, Ubisoft, Take-Two, Square Enix, Microsoft, and Capcom. Sony has already announced that they will once again not participate at the event. They’re last showing was in 2018, then skipped 2019 and announced they would be doing the same in 2020 before the event was canceled due to the pandemic.
