Konami Announces New Metal Gear Game, Metal Gear Survive, at Gamescom 2016

Konami has announced a new standalone Metal Gear game at Gamescom 2016. Metal Gear Survive is a co-op stealth game based in the world of the Metal Gear games. Konami also announced that this new Metal Gear game in the post-Kojima Konami world will be released in 2017, with a specific date not yet released. Metal Gear Survive will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. A reveal trailer was released alongside the announcement of Metal Gear Survive, and the trailer can be seen below.

According to Konami, Metal Gear Survive takes place at the end of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, after the XOF attack on Mother Base. The player controls Militaires Sans Frontières soldiers in an alternative timeline that takes place when they are sucked up into worm holes that open up above the sky during the attack. The player is then transported to what appears to be a desolate desert world, full of ruins, dangerous, deadly creatures, and military remains. In the trailer the main enemies shown off are these somewhat zombie-like creatures, with partially formed heads. The characters in the game are shown wielding makeshift melee weapons such as bow and arrows and make shift spears using sticks and combat knives. The trailer also ends teasing some huge creature that may be a part of the game or mentioned in future updates about Metal Gear Survive.

The objective of the game is like the title suggests, to survive. The former occupants of Mother Base must work together in order to make their way through this new harsh environment. Players will be able to handle threats in an up to 4 player co-op experience, which can be played online. New weapons to the Metal Gear franchise are also said to be introduced in this game. According to Konami, Metal Gear Survive “continues the pedigree of Metal Gear Solid V’s highly praised gameplay design, with a unique blend of stealth and co-op play mechanics.” Considering the almost universal praise that Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain received, this is a rather high bar to set for themselves.
