Why Battlefield 1 Is Going The History Route

With most shooters today, they are looking towards the future. Therefore they bring a big science fiction route to their stories and gameplay. However, EA has decided to revisit the past like the earlier installations of Battlefield and Call of Duty. The biggest move Dice made was to go back to a war era that was not really covered by these modern game companies, World War I. The design director, Lars Gustavsson at Gamescom told GameSpot that “every time we open the research books, we find a new weapon or technique we didn’t know was used during World War I, [and that] the misconception is that it was all trenches and slow-paced combat–but this was a war of ‘firsts.’ These empires were experimenting every chance they had.”

Through these findings they have developed many new forms of combat from horse back riding to air ship battles. There also seems to be a new melee mechanic allowing players to equip many unusual tools for hand to hand combat, as in that era most soldiers would use what ever they could get their hands on. But the main reason why they decided on World War I is that “we’ve all learned about World War II, Vietnam, and the Cold War. But World War I often goes unnoticed, despite how huge it was. It’s an older time, but in this case, it feels new.” So it is allowing players to revisit and learn about a time that most people today do not know too much about making this game concept seem new and fresh rather than just another science fiction game set in the future.

Gustavsson also brought up that “[they have] sat down to watch movies, talk with experts, page through books as we tried to figure out which story to tell from this time period.” From their research it is fair to expect a great campaign story to come, as it might be an experience unlike any other. While we patiently wait for the game to release in October for PS4, Xbox One, and PC EA did not disappoint with their epic trailers and their news of an open beta happening soon while at Gamescom.
