Double Fine Productions has not strayed from exploring the bizarre and surreal with their latest release, as the developers of games such as Psychonauts, Brütal Legend, Grim Fandango, and Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster, would prove with their 2025 title Keeper, which follows a living lighthouse and a bird-like creature named Twig as they set out across a post-apocalyptic landscape and encounter all sorts of oddities and must avoid “the Wither”, a parasitic species consuming all life it can get. Visually the game is trippy and beautiful, and creator and director Lee Petty said he took inspiration from surrealist painters such as Max Ernst and Salvador Dali for their “vibrant, dream-like worlds that are both familiar and unlike anything else”, as well as movies such as The Dark Crystal and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, which he says are about “strange, otherworldly places and unusual forms of life, and both present as family-friendly films but have weirder, darker undercurrents”.
Keeper would release on Xbox and Windows on October 17th, 2025, but following Double Fine’s separation from Xbox Game Studios in July of this year they would gain ownership to their IPs and are now trying to expand their reach onto other platforms, such as with Double Fine shadow-dropping Keeper on the PS5 this past Thursday during Sony’s State of Play 2026. The new port doesn’t have any changes or deviations from the original release, but alongside it did come a “psychedelic mode”, whose description on the Double Fine website asks “How does a lighthouse trip balls? What if the sky was an endless chromatic spiral that led to a higher plane of existence? Have you ever wanted to look directly into the EYE OF GOD and have it look back?” The new mode ups the already trippy visuals and according to Lee Petty is “inspired by the saturated, distorted, and transcendent art that came out of the counter-culture movement of the late 60’s”.
