Square Enix has ended the development of Just Cause: Mobile after four years of fans waiting. The anticipated title was based on the highly popular franchise, Just Cause, and many are disappointed to see that the mobile game never hit the stores before getting canceled.
The game was first announced in December 2020 at The Game Awards. Just Cause: Mobile reportedly would have had a single-player and multiplayer experience that incorporated mainstays in the series such as grappling, gliding, and shooting. The game would have allowed players to invite friends to compete online in thirty-person multiplayer mode and four-player co-op challenges in return for upgrades and gear. In addition, the game had a story mode where players could create a customizable character to embark on a journey and meet up with many familiar faces in this open-world mobile game.
Just Cause: Mobile was expected to release in 2021, however, issues in development made that difficult. The game would receive constant delays that were met with even more complications later on. Just Cause: Mobile was announced to be released sometime in July 2021. However, Development did not go as expected which pushed the launch date of the game back a couple of months. Fans waited to hear news about beta tests or pre-registration to come out for the game, but Square Enix had stayed silent. Finally, Square Enix announced once again that Just Cause: Mobile was now going to be released in 2022 due to complications presented by the COVID-19 pandemic at the time.
When April 2022 rolled around, the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand had regional access to the game which excited fans. However, their whimsical expectations were not when footage of gameplay did not showcase all that was promised at the 2020 Game Awards. Many reported that the game was decent enough to play, but it was far from being polished and lacked a lot of the charm that brought people’s attention to the title in the first place. Then in December 2022, Just Cause: Mobile had been delayed once again, but no specifications were given as to why that was.
After four years of waiting, the team behind Just Cause: Mobile made another announcement stating the official closure of the mobile game. The Just Cause Mobile’s Community Manager Anne Lou had this to say, “Today, we have important news about JUST CAUSE: MOBILE. It is with great sadness that we are announcing the end of development for JUST CAUSE: MOBILE. As of tomorrow, 3 July 2023, the game will no longer appear on digital stores. It is never easy to put forth an announcement of this nature, especially to our fans who have been awaiting the release. We sincerely appreciate the support you have given us.”
