Internet Archive Releases Thousands of MS-DOS Games

The Internet Archive based in San Francisco, California provides the general public digital access to all sorts of collections such as music websites, photos, books, and games. This internet library is constantly releasing new materials and this past week was no exception. Thousands of MS-DOS games from the 80s and 90s are now available on the archive for the public to enjoy.

There are already games available on the Archive including ones for Atari 2600, PC, and old arcade games. Adding the additional 2296 MS-DOS games only further expands the Archive’s nostalgic collection. Jason Scott the project curator along with the many employees of the Archive spent over three years working on importing the games onto a EM-DOSBOX emulator. This emulator was designed specifically for the DOS programs. The majority of the software was made compatible for browsers by Javascript.

While some of these games have a few kinks here and there, feedback has been generally positive. To play some of the Archives more notable games such as Prince of Persia or Orgeon trail, please visit their website. For any questions on MS-DOS games please visit the Internet Archive’s FAQ section or hop on over to Jason Scott’s personal blog for futher details.

Daniela Drook: Daniela's fascination of video games began with her first Super Nintendo console at the tender age of 6, exploring the adventures of Link with Zelda: Link to the Past and Goofy from Goof Troop: Goofy and Max Adventures. From there her love of gaming only grew moving on to more advanced consoles such as the Sega Dreamcast, PlayStation, PC, and later on Xbox. These days you can catch Daniela battling guardians in the crucible or enemies plaguing the world of Destiny on PS4. She is currently studying to become a software engineer in hopes of one day developing her own game. Please feel free to interact with her on twitter.
