What is it about the blend of witches, Japanese mythology, and Victorian-era sensibilities that makes for such a tantalizing aesthetic combination? We’re not sure, but Japanese indie devs have certainly proven their ability to harness its power over the past 20 years.
The most prolific species among this breed, ZUN’s Touhou Project series, continues to enjoy massive acclaim to this day over a wide variety of genres, including bullet hell shooters, card games, platformers, fighting games, fan books, manga, and as anyone who browses Niconico can tell you, an endless sea of fanmade tribute videos and parodies. But remarkably less-known is rdein’s Momodora series, which, incidentally, is not Japanese. This March, Steam users will be able to experience the latest installment in the sidescrolling platformer saga, Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight, where it will be joining Momodora III.
You can check out its gameplay in action below:
Chronologically, RUtM is a prequel to the other games in the Momodora series. Players take control of a priestess named Kaho, who seeks an audience with the Queen to rid the land of a malignant curse that plagues the land. But Kaho’s path will be fraught with danger. She will hack, slash, and blast her way through undead legions and unholy monstrosities alike to free her land of evil. All in an absolutely adorable pixelated visual style reminiscent of the works of Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya, of course.
Indeed, both rdein and Momodora’s publisher, Playism, are proud to announce that RUtM boasts both an enthralling story and challenging gameplay (if you choose a harder difficulty level, that is). As can be seen from the trailer above, fluid animations and charming dialogue round out the Momodora experience. Reverie Under the Moonlight is a game that platformer fans and indie game aficionados won’t want to miss.
Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight will be available on Steam on March 4.
