Ikumi Nakamura Planning Okami Sequel Pitch

In an interview with IGN Japan answering questions of fans from Twitter, Ikumi Nakamura revealed that she had plans to make another game for the action-adventure Okami series. The creative director and concept artist behind games like Bayonetta, The Evil Within series, and Okami, Nakamura said that during quarantine she has had plenty of creative freedom and ideas for what content she wants to create. “Right now is a learning period for myself, I am learning new art styles, studying video and content creation, and I want to become the ideal developer for the games I’m making,” Nakamura said. Nakamura also explained that she is currently working on the development of her own game studio, though concrete plans have not been announced yet. During the interview, Nakamura also explained her plans to pitch the idea of a new Okami title to developers at Capcom once quarantine has been lifted. “There is still a lot of story to tell from the Okami universe,” Nakamura said, as she urges fans to start petitions to show interest in a second Okami game.

The original Okami game developed by Clover Studio is set in “classic” Japan and uses Japanese folklore and mythology to tell the story of the sun goddess Amaterasu, in the form of a white wolf, who saves Japan from darkness. The gameplay is heavily based on The Legend of Zelda: Windwaker and uses a unique cel-style shading for the environment. Originally released on PS2 consoles, the original Okami game now has an HD remastered version that is available on Steam, Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch consoles. Nakamura also added at the end of the interview that she did not mind what role she had in the development of the new Okami, so long as the game becomes a reality.
