Hideki Kamiya-“Okami is Going to be Back” Director of the Series Proclaims the Franchise is Coming Back

Hideki Kamiya may have just stopped the internet dead in it’s tracks with this one line. In a Twitter video post, ex Ghostwire Tokyo director, Ikumi Nakamura, stood next to Kamiya when he stated “Okami is going to be back.” Nakamura, with a stunned expression, looked to him and uttered “really?” Kamiya reinforced his words with an emphatic “yes” before the video ends. In the tweet’s post above the video, Nakamura states “I want to work on it too!” Your not alone on that one Nakamura.

As for Okami itself, it’s definitely overdue for a new title. The first game in the series was headed by Kamiya at the now defunct Clover Studio, which would become the basis for it’s successor, Platinum Games. When it originally launched on the PlayStation 2 in 2006, it was critically acclaimed by nearly everyone who played it, as it perfectly blended Japanese art with adventure/RPG puzzle mechanics.

The original received a spiritual sequel, Okamiden, for the Nintendo DS in 2010, while the  game was ported to the Nintendo Wii, and then eventually to the PlayStation 3 with some slight enhancements. Further down the line, the game was re-released again, this time with some substantial upgrades for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch, going by the name Okami HD

Speaking of Capcom, the company has been enjoying a lot of success with their franchises in recent years, specifically Monster Hunter, Devil May Cry, and Resident Evil. They released financial report which hinted that they might attempt to revive some of their older and more dormant IP’s due to this “Capcom Renaissance” they are experiencing. With a new Okami now on the way, it looks like they’re going all in with this plan.
