Double Fine Productions has decided to to surprise Nintendo Switch owners by releasing Grim Fandango Remastered out of nowhere, just in time for the Day of the Dead. For those who aren’t aware, Grim Fandango is an award-winning point-and-click adventure game released by LucasArts on October 30, 1998. Tim Schafer, the founder of Double Fine Productions, was the writer and director behind the game when he worked for LucasArts. In the game, you play as Manny Calavera, a travel agent in the land of the dead who sells luxury trip packages to souls on their four-year journey to eternal rest.
Grim Fandango Remastered has a significant amount that is different from the original release. For example, all the textures are now hi-res, which is complimented by the added dynamic lighting system. Peter McConnell’s classic score has also been re-recorded by a full live orchestra, adding to the atmosphere of the title. Finally, for fans, there are more than 2 hours of developer commentary added, as well as concept art that is available for your viewing pleasure through an in-game gallery. While there are a large number of new additions, there aren’t any exclusive additions to the Nintendo Switch release of the remaster that weren’t in any other versions.
As the 20th anniversary of Grim Fandango is being celebrated, there is far more than just the release of Grim Fandango Remastered on the Nintendo Switch. There is a physical edition of the PlayStation 4 version of Grim Fandango Remastered that is up for pre-order, coming with some goodies for those who order it. There is also vinyl version of the score that is available for pre-order, containing 2 separate LPs with unique album art. Both of these special 20th anniversary edition items will be shipped early next year.
