World renowned author George R. R. Martin who best known for the A Song of Ice and Fire book series, which became the television phenomenon Game of Thrones, is apparently consulting with a game studio on a new video game. The news came from Martin himself in a post on his personal blog about Game of Thrones finally coming to an end this past Sunday. In the post, Martin details what else he has been working on next, and, briefly mentions he has consulted with a Japanese studio on a video game.
There are these short films I am hoping to make, adaptations of classic stories by one of the most brilliant, quirky, and original writers our genre has ever produced. I’ve consulted on a video game out of Japan. And then there’s Meow Wolf…
While Martin didn’t give any other details on what studio he has been working with, there appears to be one studio that many speculate it to be. According to Gematsu, that studio may in fact be FromSoftware, the studio behind the Dark Souls series, Bloodbourne, and most recently Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. First, there was a video uploaded to YouTube talking about a rumored project from Martin and the studio.
According to Gematsu’s report, the alleged project is currently known as “GR” and is an open world game. It has also already been in development for three years, and is set to be published by Bandai Namco. They would continue by stating that the game will be debuted at Microsoft’s E3 press conference next month. This would be unsurprising as, last year, the studio officially revealed Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice during Microsoft’s event.
While this pairing does sound very promising, there has been no confirmation from Martin or FromSoftware that the reports are true. Martin appears to have his plate full at the moment. FromSoftware, on the other hand, just released Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice back in March to strong critical and commercial success.
