What started back in 2018 as a crowd-funded project, soon became the underdog, and finally gets a big announcement. Gato Studio had begun their large campaign back on October 16, 2018, roughly a year ago. They wanted to make a classic party-style RPG game that was similar to Dragon Age: Origins and Baldur’s Gate. This being their first title The Waylanders.
The trailer doesn’t show much of what’s to come from The Waylanders, other than the grand sweep of visuals from across it separate times. Because, within this epic, there’s more than one timeline that the player has to travel between. Because when a deal with the Gods go wrong, during an event that was meant to be jovial, the hero of this game is near death and becomes untethered from time. And soon enough, our hero travels between two timelines, that of Medieval Spain, and that of their home in the Celtic landscape.
From here, the player can transport between the two times, but their companions can’t. During each time, the player gets a team of different companions who will follow you through your quest. Each companion is unique, has their own in-depth backstory, and can take you on their loyalty missions, and possible even romance one.
For the story, players have to travel between Celtic and Medieval Spain, two different timelines that will eventually meet up in some way, somehow. And whichever choices the player makes will affect each timeline, either causing a good shift in their favor, or dire consequences. The game promises that some of these choices will affect the entire outcome of the game, as there are multiple endings.
Along with the companions, and the story, there are 6 basic classes that the player can choose from, with over 30 advanced classes and over 800 skills to learn. Each one depends on the players preference and there’s plenty to choose from.
The Waylanders is still in development, as the release date isn’t until some time in 2020, but Gato Studio is giving consistent updates on the Steam page, as well as the Kickstarter page. Travel between times and choose which side to save? There’s plenty of adventure waiting beyond one timeline.
