Gamescom Opening Night Live 2020 Recap: New Game Reveals, Updates, & More

Earlier this year, the organizers of Gamescom revealed that the show will still be happening as digital format. One of the things that came back from last year was Opening Night Live, a press conference similar to the E3 press conferences but focusing on the video game industry as a whole instead of one company. Earlier this week, Geoff Keighley announced some of the things that were shown such as Fall Guys Season 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Mafia: Definitive Edition, and an extended and uninterrupted new gameplay demo of Ratchet & Clank: Drift Apart. Here is a full rundown of everything that was shown off during the event.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War was officially revealed yesterday. It’s set to come out on November 13, 2020. The game takes place after the events of the first game and has players in 1981 as they try to deal with a threat during the Cold War. Dan Vondrak, Creative Director, Raven Software talked and revealed more details about the story including that players will create a character instead of assuming a role as in the previous titles. Vondrak also revealed that the choices that you make throughout the story will have an impact on how the story ends. A new cinematic revolving around the main antagonist of the campaign was also shared.

A new game called Unknown 9: Awakening was announced. The game is being developed by Reflector Entertainment and follows the story of Harouna as she tries to comprehend new abilities that she has acquired while dealing with visions of her own death. The game is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC.

During Bethesda At Home, id software revealed new details about Doom Eternal‘s first story DLC, The Ancient Gods Part One. It takes place after the events of Doom Eternal as the Doom Slayer continues his fight to protect humanity. The first gameplay trailer was released.

During EA Play this year, we got a very brief look at what Bioware is working on next for the Dragon Age franchise. During Opening Night Live, the developers provided a new behind the scenes look at what they are working on with the next installment of Dragon Age including details about the story, characters, and locations that we may visit in the new game. There is also small snippets of an early look at combat in the game as well.

Doc Brown crashed in for a visit and revealed that Surgeon Simulator 2 is out now. The sequel includes multiplayer, a story mode, and user-generated levels. The game is available now on the Epic Game Store. Bridge Constructor: The Walking Dead was also announced. The game is set to release sometime later this year. Sam and Max is making a return with a new virtual reality game coming in 2021.

During BlizzCon 2019, the next expansion for World of Warcraft was revealed. Today, a release date for World of Warcraft: Shadowlands was announced alongside a new animated short showcasing one of the new places players will get to visit. the next expansion launches on October 27, 2020.

Warhammer: Age of Sigmar: Storm Ground is a new strategy game set in the Warhammer: Age of Sigmar universe. The game will feature the Stormcast Eternals and Nagash’s undead Nighthaunt as factions. Warhammer: Age of Sigmar: Storm Grounds launches in 2021 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch.

Toys for Bob, the developers for Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time revealed that the game will feature “Flashback” levels. These levels are designed to challenge players’ puzzle-solving and technical performing abilities. Collecting the Flashback levels also has players discover the origin story of Crash and Coco and they can experience Bandicoots’ training in Neo Cortex’s Test Chambers. Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time launches on October 2, 2020 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

A new trailer for Outriders was released showcasing all of the classes that players can choose from including the recently revealed Technomancher class. The new trailer for Necromunda: Underhive Wars showcases all of the different houses that players can choose from. The game launches September 8, 2020, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. A new gameplay trailer for Teardown was revealed showing off how you can pull of the perfect heist by manipulating the destructible environment in a way that leads to the perfect getaway. Little Nightmares 2 gameplay was revealed showing the playable characters trying to escape all of the obstacles in their path. Jerry “The King” Lawler and Mauro Ranallo were announced as commentators for WWE 2k Battlegrounds as a new trailer showed new gameplay as well.

The developers of Star Wars: Squadrons shared a look at a mission from the campaign of the game. The mission focuses on the Empire as they are tasked with extracting a spy after she found vital data on a project for the New Republic. The story of the game focuses on two opposing pilots and is set after the destruction of the second Death Star. The game is set to release on October 2, 2020.

12 Minutes is a new game being published by Annapurna Interactive. It’s an interactive thriller about a man stuck in a time loop. Today, James McAvoy, Daisy Ridley, and William Dafoe were revealed as the cast of the game. A new trailer for the next Warframe expansion was released. Warframe: Heart of Deimos is available now for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Override 2: Super Mech League was announced. The game is set to release later during the Holidays and will be available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC. A new expansion called Journey to Batuu is coming to The Sims 4. The new Star Wars centric expansion is based on Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge and features all sorts of Star Wars characters, locations, and vehicles.

A new trailer for Mafia: Definitive Edition was released showcasing new vehicle and combat gameplay while giving us a new look at the story of the game. Mafia: Definitive Edition is a full remake of the original Mafia game but adds more to the story of the game.

Lemnis Gate was announced. It’s a new first-person shooter strategy game that is set on a 25-second loop. The game will be released in 2021 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. A new trailer for LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga was released. The game was delayed and will be released next year for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC. A new trailer for Struggling was released. It’s a physics-based co-op platformer. Chorus was announced at the first look at gameplay running on Xbox Series X event earlier in the year. A new trailer revealing the first look at gameplay was released.

Fall Guys Season 2 will be bringing in new rounds focusing on the medieval times. The sneak peek also provided the first look at some of the other costumes that you can get and like the new levels, they are medieval themed. A new trailer for Age of Empires 3: Definitive Edition reveals that the game is set to release on October 15. A new trailer for Wasteland 3 focuses on Liberty who looks like the antagonist of the game. Wasteland 3 launches tomorrow for Xbox One and PC. It is also available on Xbox Game Pass.

A new trailer was revealed for Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond. The next entry into the Medal of Honor series is built for VR. the new trailer focuses on the story of the game. An interview during Opening Night Live also revealed that more VR modes will be coming to the game alongside the campaign. The new battle royale Spellbreak is releasing on September 3, 2020, and will be available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. Factor 5 revealed a first look at the Turrican Anthology.

Destiny 2: Beyond Light is the start of the next chapter of Destiny 2. Like all of the other fall expansions, this one brings in a lot of new things to the game. One of the biggest new changes is the addition of a new power type, Stasis. The new trailer for the next expansion showcases the different new abilities that Guardians are able to wield with the power of the darkness.

Lastly, Opening Night Live ended with an extended look at new gameplay for Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. Insomniac Games also revealed that it will be released in the launch window of PlayStation 5.
