Clearly, the era of battle royales is at an all-time high. While Fortnite takes care of the free-to-play market with whacky modes and insane building mechanics, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds currently stands as the most popular “serious” shooter that includes vehicular action. Problem is, PUBG is not known for its AAA polish or fluid mechanics, especially with their vehicles. This is where the recently announced Fractured Lands has a chance to shine.
Fractured Lands comes from Los Angeles-based Unbroken Studios, a team of 40+ industry veterans who’ve previously worked on major titles such as Battlefield, Call of Duty and Medal of Honor. The developers describe their main philosophy as working to create “intuitive mechanics built on robust technologies” with community feedback as a top factor. The developers seem to understand that in order to create the best online-multiplayer experience transparency in the development process is key.
Per a PR email sent to mxdwn Games, the developers provide the setting and basics of their upcoming title:
In a post-apocalyptic world, road warriors must out-drive and out-gun the competition in a battle to survive. While there’s plenty of arms to scavenge in the wastes, customizable cars are players’ most powerful weapons. Not just transport, vehicles are a seamless extension of the inventory or mounted with deadly upgrades to run down the competition to bring a new level of strategy to the Battle Royale genre.
Being that the recently announced Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and its currently short-on-details battle-royale mode, Blackout, won’t be out until October, PC players have their first shot at a AAA battle-royale experience when Fractured Lands starts its Closed Beta in June. The developers state that the Closed Beta will take place the weekends of June 8, 22, and 29; you can sign up for a chance to participate at the game’s main website. Fractured Lands will be available through Steam and currently has an availability date of July 2018.
