The Evolution Championship Series (EVO) is underway with a digital-only format due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Despite the ever-changing nature of the pandemic, Sony and the tournament organizers are already planning on next year’s event. Announced during the online tournament, EVO 2022 will once again take place from August 5-7, only this time it will be a planned in-person event. In addition, EVO will make its return to Las Vegas, where it has been held annually since 2005.
As you can see in the tweet above, the organizers are intending on making EVO an in-person event once again. Besides the date and location, no further information was given in regards to this announcement. Considering that we’re still in the middle of EVO 2021, it’ll more than likely be a while until we hear anything more about this new reveal, especially with the pandemic still having a major effect on every type of alleyway and avenue around the world.
Last year a planned online only-event was in the works after every single in-person venue was canceled around the world due to the pandemic. However, due to allegations against then CEO Joey Cuellar, the tournament was canceled altogether, making it the very first time since its inception that EVO did not occur in the calendar year. The future of EVO was up in the air until earlier this year when it was announced that Sony and RTS had acquired the fighting game tournament and revealed that the event would take place in an online-only format, which is taking place as we speak.
