Gamers will see more of Epic Games in the near future when it comes to mobile games. During the Epic Games State Of Unreal Event at GDC, it was announced that Epic Games will be heading to Android and IOS at the end of 2024. The General Manager of Epic Games Store, Steve Allison, made the announcement.
The Epic game Store reaches a huge global audience that continues to grow and should be considered essential in the launch plans of every game coming to PC.
Epic Games was founded in 1991 “by CEO Tim Sweeney” and is located in Cary, North Carolina. According to Epic Games’ website, “Epic is leading interactive entertainment company and provider of 3D engine technology. Epic operates one of the world’s largest games, Fortnite, which is a vibrant ecosystem of social entertainment experiences, including first-party games like Fortnite Battle Royale, LEGO® Fortnite, Rocket Racing, and Fortnite Festival, as well as creator-made experiences. Epic Games is also the developer behind Unreal Engine. Unreal Engine “powers up several leading games of the world” and has been taken on within industries like “film and television, broadcast and live events, architecture, automotive, and simulation”.
According to Allion, by the end of 2023, Epic Games ended up with “270 million PC players with peak monthly active users of 75 million”. On top of that, player spending was $950. Epic Games Store was launched in 2018, accompanied by “an industry-leading 8812 revenue share with 88% percent of all revenue going back to developers on every sale”.
The announcement of Epic Games coming to Mobile comes on the heels of their legal dispute. In 2020, Epic filed lawsuit against Apple for “removing Fornite from the App Store” and for their mobile practices. Epic Games has also been dealing with legal disputes with Google over their mobile practices as well. Even with all of this going on, Epic Games has been “hard at work” and making moves. This is what Steve Allison said during the announcement at the State Of Unreal Event:
For the past few years, Epic has tirelessly been fighting gatekeepers on mobile platforms to allow for distribution that is more fair, more open, and built for how we need to run our businesses today, and this battle is not over yet. However, we have made a enough progress, and I am here today to make an announcement that we’re super pumped about, and that is that we are hard at work on the Epic Games Store for mobile targeting to launch on IOS and Android by the end of this year.
Along with Epic games heading to mobile, Fortnite will also be returning to mobile. According to Allison, “a selection of third-party partners” will join when Epic Games launches on mobile. A specific date for when Epic Games will be launching on mobile was announced, just that it will happen sometime at the end of the year.
