E3 2014: Dragon Age: Inquisition On Stage Presentation

BioWare’s epic RPG series gives players yet another game, Dragon Age: Inquisition, we got to attend the presentation on our third day of E3 2014, the presentation was about half an hour long, and was lead by Executive producer Mark Darrah, which the presentations told us about game background, gameplay mechanics, co-op, classes, and more. Dragon Age: Inquisition will be releasing in America on October 7th for PC, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4. You can pre-order it now on their site, here.

The presentation began with a gameplay footage trailer, and from that you can just tell that this game will be an amazing game compared to the previous Dragon Age titles. Due to having such a large team this time for this game compared to the other games, you can really tell that they worked hard on characters, animations, and trying to make it more realistic.

The presentations goes on with the gameplay demo, where you are at the character menu, which you can choose from classes that include Mage, Rogue, and Warrior, along with 4 different races, plus either male or female. Though for this demo, the character was an Elf male Rogue. You can now craft armor, plus choose from over 200 talents and spells.

In the game, it is in an open world, where anywhere you can see, you are able to travel to. If rebels see you, they won’t care about the innocent you meet along the way, they will go after them and you. Everywhere you visit in the game continues as part of a larger story of the Inquisition, meaning that they want you to see it and experience the story instead of being told what to do. The world of the Dragon Age is being spread apart, where there is a rift that has demons that are starting to threaten and leak into your own world. Someone is behind it and you will need to find out who. Begin your journey between two nations in order to discover the mystery and truth behind all of this.

The Elf male Rogue is accompanied by three of characters in the team, a Qunari called Iron Bull, an elf archer, and a sorceress. Your role is stop the templars, because they are tearing the place apart. You are the leader of leaders, with the help of Iron Bull who is the leader of the mercenaries and Leliana.

In the demo, you also get to see the mounts that are in the game, which includes a horse that you are able to take and travel across the world with. Even though it wasn’t in this demo, there are more exotic mounts that are included in the game.

The adventurers continue as they traveling across of what remains of a battlefield, fire, destroyed equipment and dead bodies everywhere. In the open world of Dragon Age: Inquisition, you encounter random people who would give you optional side quests. If you were to play through without side quests, only story to story, it was mentioned that it may be about 50 hours worth of gameplay.

The journey continues on, as suddenly the elf rogue and team members run into a bear, and this is where we get to see some of the combat mechanics in the game. You are able to instruct your team on what to do, which means when you play the single play adventure mode, you are able to take control and switch between all the teammates, whether that be switching to the archer to shoot his arrow at the enemy, or the rogue to sneak up, it is up to you. You have finally killed the bear, but we are told that if you kill a certain animal too many times in the game, this would then change how the story in the game plays out for you towards the end, so be careful. This is also the same when it comes to building up your forces and resistance, you need to make sure you are thinking carefully of what might happen later on in the story.

The demo continues on, as we go into Lady Shayna’s valley, and this is where you will encounter a dragon, who are apex predators. The previous games had the dragon target being just a circle, when you attacked, but being that the graphics are much better now and each limb of the dragon has a target you can attack. So, if you keep hitting the dragons right front leg, it will actually limp because of the damage you did to that specific part of the dragon. There was a feature that was shown that slowed down time, which helped out with damaging the dragon even more, and let to the dragon flying away. If you feel like you can’t handle the certain fight, like this dragon for example, you are able to run away from the battle instead of being killed right away like some games, which don’t allow you to run away from the battle. You also are able to save anywhere in the game, you won’t have to be at a town or save at a statue, etc.

Later on in the game, the player encounters Leliana, who is currently shackled by her hands and is interrogated by a thug. Though when your character walks by, the thug notice’s you and that is when Leliana takes advantage of this distraction and ends up breaking the thugs neck with just her legs. Though before this scene, the player was given a choice to either save Leliana or let her get captured by the thugs. The developers chose to have her be captured, which led to Leliana becoming grumpy towards you and your decisions. This feeds on the whole thing of needing to watch out what you do, because it will have its consequences towards the end.

You can watch the ‘Stand Together’ trailer for Dragon Age: Inquisition, below:

The presentation ends when you and Dorian are trying to close the rift and Leliana has to fight off the enemy soldiers in order to defend from stopping both you and Dorian. And you’ll have to just pre-order the game and choose your ending and see how it goes, instead of just telling you what actually happened in the scene. So go become the legends of legends and begin the journey to stop the templars and save the world you know!
