Let’s face it, video gamers love their video game collectibles. Whether it’s a special edition of a new video game, or a limited run of some merchandise, the video game industry is a booming market largely due to this fact. Over the course of many years, companies have taken advantage of this by including some of those items with video games as pre order incentives for when they launch. Others companies utilize selling a large cache of collectibles that pertain to certain franchises for a subscription (LootCrate), and while these practices are acceptable, it can get little out of hand. With this in mind, Capcom has announced that their upcoming hack and slash game, Devil May Cry 5, will receive an Ultra Limited Edition that comes with Dante’s iconic red duster jacket, for 900,000 Yen, or $8,600.
The package includes the game, the jacket, and that’s it. On top of that, if Dante isn’t your desired character from the series, then you have two other choices, Nero’s Jacket or the new character, V’s Jacket, with a reduced price of 750,000 Yen/$6,653 and 600,000 Yen/$5,323. At least they are offering some variety for their fans. Now, believe it or not, but this isn’t the most expensive video game collectors edition to exist. That honor belongs to Saints Row IV The Super Dangerous Wad Wad Edition, which included an actual Toyota Prius, and two first class flights on an airplane for 1 million dollars. Whether that was a publicity stunt or not, there isn’t any official record of anyone purchasing that edition of Saints Row IV.
As of this writing, the Ultra Limited Edition is only available for pre order in Japan. Capcom hasn’t stated if this will make it to the West, but with an outrageous price tag like that, it might be for the best if it doesn’t. Now don’t get me wrong, the jackets look awesome, but whether they are worth over $8,000 is up to the customers to decide, and if they wish to spend that much money for one of three different colored jackets with a video game, then more power to them. Fans are obviously more than excited about the return of Dante and Nero, and Capcom is taking full advantage of it. Either way, the Ultra Limited Edition is up for pre order on the Capcom Japan Website, which you can check out here.
Devil May Cry 5 is slated to launch on March 8, 2019 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
