11 bit studios have released a console release date trailer for their city-building survival strategy title Frostpunk 2. Gematsu reports that the title will launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S on September 18, while being made available on Game Pass and physical copies releasing through publisher Skybound games. Frostpunk 2 originally launched on PC in September 2024.
Shared in the console editions press release, Frostpunk 2 production coordinator Igor Skibinski said “Initially, we tried to carry over as many interface solutions as possible [from PC to console], but the two games differ so much in terms of gameplay that we had to adapt and rework those systems over time. Still, our main focus was to make interaction with the game feel seamless—so players never have to think about how to play while they’re playing. Our ambition is to once again prove that even complex strategy games can feel intuitive and satisfying on consoles.”
Control schemes in the console edition have been tailored for gamepads, players can use bumpers to cycle between districts, and use a radial menu over resource piles. The PC version of Frostpunk 2 will receive an update scheme for the gamepad UI. The special edition also known as the ‘Icebreaker Edition’ includes the game, a pop-up diorama of New London, a digital novella Warm Flesh and behind-the-scenes artbook. The collector’s edition also known as ‘Whiteout Edition’ includes everything found in the ‘Icebreaker Edition’, a shadow box with LED lighting and key art, a metal and enamel keychain, two New London post cards, Frostpunk-themed stickers, one of two embroidered faction patches, the disciplined Technocrats or the fervent Icebloods.
11 bit studios’ intent may be to ensure that their complex strategy title feels intuitive and satisfying even on consoles. With a positive reception at its initial PC release, Frostpunk 2 may fare well at its console launch come September.
