In all of the Black Friday and Cyber Monday madness that just ensued throughout the week, a lot of gamers forgot that there was a brand new video game release this week. In fact, some very dedicated fans have been waiting over 6 years for this, as it the long anticipated sequel in the Four Horseman Apocalypse series, Darksiders III. Playing as one of the Horseman, Fury, you’re tasked with hunting down the Seven Deadly Sins, while discovering new lands to explore and puzzles to complete. The game looks amazing, and while there is no doubt that most of the fans will enjoy this, some of the casual members of the gaming community might be taken aback by Darksiders III.
This was made evident by the review scores made by media outlets. Its current score on Metacritic is 65, while the User Score Section has it at 6.6. As far as review numbers go, this is quite dynamic look for the game. For example, IGN rated the game 7.10, which is a fairly high score considering the intense review process the website is known for. GamesRadar gave the game 3.5/5, and Comicbook did the same, both citing the excellent visuals, but criticizing the technical issues and confusing puzzles.
However, Gamespot absolutely decimated Darksiders III in their review. Scored with a very low 4/10, they were critical of many gameplay elements, including that the “progression is simplistic and devolves combat into repetition” and “platforming and puzzles are dull and few and far between.” It’s important to note that these reviews are all done by professional writers/gamers, and from the looks of it, not all of them are fans of the gameplay.
The gameplay probably looks dated to some people, as the Darksiders series was created with the hack n slash genre, and hasn’t deviated since. Sure puzzles can be confusing at times, but that’s how puzzles are supposed to be, a confusing mess that you need to put back together. As for the technical issues, a large majority of games that are released nowadays are expected to have some bugs/glitches at launch with the inevitable patch job afterwards.
How bad those issues are depends on how fun the game is, and with Darksiders III, it looks like those issues aren’t as rampant as Fallout 76. It might take some time for gamers to come around and play through it, but for the time being, fair or not, this is how the game is being perceived, a bit mixed. Darksiders III officially launches today for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
