Cygames Reveals Cinematic Trailer For Upcoming Game ‘Project Awakening’

One of the first and most memorable games shown at Sony’s Pre-TGS Conference was a new title by famous mobile game studios Cygames Inc, dubbed Project Awakening. The reveal came out of nowhere, and had not been hinted at before this point. Cygames is a Japanese studio known for its 2D mobile games with gorgeous, hand-drawn art. It came as a surprise, then, that at a Playstation conference, players saw its uncharacteristic jump into the traditional 3D realm, and on a major console system, no less. Even the art style and tone of the new game was a stark departure from the brightly colored, Japanese anime-themed aesthetic of the company’s usual titles.

At first glance, the game’s cinematic seems to draw influence from a mixture of Dark Souls, Dragon’s Dogma, and Monster Hunter. A lone, armor-clad warrior traverses through a lush forest, eventually entering an open ravine to face off against a dragon-like creature. All the while, medieval fantasy chants and an ominous narration accompany the man’s dire plight. The concept of man vs. gargantuan beasts is not an original one, the pinnacle of the genre having been done more than 10 years ago with Shadow of the Colossus. What’s astounding about the gameplay (though we don’t know if it is accurate in-game footage) is the crisp animation and breathtakingly gorgeous graphics.

The knight’s movements, dodge rolls, and attacks are reminiscent of Dark Souls, while the beast looks like an enemy lifted from the Monster Hunter world. However, to designate a “clone” label to what is essentially an early tech demo would be unfair; if the final product is every bit as polished and beautiful as the initial unveil, then players will surely be treated to a grand adventure. The trailer ends with the battered warrior looking on as the towering silhouettes of many beasts loom in the distance, perhaps an indication of the obstacles to come.

Aside from the trailer, there are no additional details or news of the title, not even a real name. An estimated release date would be a tall order at this point in time considering the official website yields very little information as well. What is for certain, though, is that the final game will most likely launch on the PS4 given the context of the reveal.
