Cross-play Finally Comes to Minecraft on PS4 Today

Starting today, the PlayStation 4 version of Minecraft is finally getting cross-play support with the release of the Bedrock version of the game on the console. Described as “the unified version of the game that offers the same experience across all consoles,” the Bedrock version of the game will allow PS4 players to finally play with their friends who have the game on Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, or mobile.

In a statement given to The Verge, studio head Helen Chiang commented on finally bringing cross-play to PlayStation 4 stating, “One of Minecraft’s core missions is to connect players across devices and provide the best experience regardless of platform.” Chiang continued with, “We continue to fulfill that mission here today by welcoming PS4 players to Minecraft on Bedrock and growing our cross-platform multiplayer community.”

Players who already own Minecraft on PlayStation 4, luckily, won’t have to purchase the Bedrock version. Instead, the game will be updated to that when players go to access the game. The Bedrock version will also allow PS4 players to access to the Minecraft Marketplace where they can access skins, worlds, minigames, and more.

Aside from this milestone, Minecraft itself has had a very good year. Earlier this year, it was revealed that the game had hit a whopping 112 million monthly players. Then, few short weeks ago, Minecraft Earth launched in the U. S. and was downloaded over 1.4 million times during its first week. It was also revealed that the game was the most watched game on YouTube this year. Plus, the dungeon crawling spinoff, Minecraft Dungeons, is set to release just a few months from now in April 2020.
