Sequels in the 8-bit style in gaming is relatively rare due to the games made during that technological period being largely outdated by the time a sequel was in the works. With the retro resurgence of games in the 8-bit style, however, modern technology and game design philosophy can be used to create sequel that expand on original concepts while remaining consistent artistically with their predecessors. This is the case with the upcoming next game in the Crescent Tower series, Crescent Tower: Rising, which promises an expansion of mechanics and options with new characters in the same world as the first RPG game by Curry Croquet.
The announcement trailer for Crescent Tower: Rising initially reintroduces the core concept behind the first game of adventurers coming to a tower that only appears once every 50 years. The heroism of the first game’s protagonist has inspired the coming story of the next game, which will involve a similar delve through a dungeon. The Steam page for the title explains that the story will be split into five chapters, with multiple protagonists making progress and weaving their stories through one another.
Among the new features coming to the sequel, the most touched on is the added customization that players will have for their party. While exploring the dungeon, players will be able to stop at the Adventurer’s Guild to begin a class change between 14 different classes and learn new skills from each. These skills can then be arranged and combined in classes other than their original. Certain characters will also have innate skills to distinguish them such as the Dragon Skill: Inferno, which can be used to damage multiple enemies in combat or clear away trees in the overworld.
As with any good sequel, Crescent Tower: Rising promises to keep the beloved features of the first game while adding in new ways to engage with those systems. The game is set to release on console and PC with the release date to be announced.
