Chinese Indie RPG Scroll of Taiwu Sells One Million Copies

One of the more popular new releases on Steam is a Chinese-exclusive indie RPG called The Scroll of Taiwu. Since the game’s release into Early Access in late September, the game has managed to surpass one million copies sold.

The game’s Steam page (which is translated from its native Chinese) describes itself as an indie RPG with procedural generation that’s based off of Chinese mythology and Wuxia tales. The description reads:

In the “Taiwu” Universe, besides playing as a “successor of Taiwu”, you will live your life in many different ways: being kind, evil, or somewhere between. You can visit the sects and gangs around the world and learn the various martial art styles; you can choose to make sworn brothers or blood feud; you can establish a village of your own and run various businesses; or you can settle down with your love and enter parenthood. Eventually, you will face the greatest enemy of the “Taiwu” family and determine the fate of the entire world.

ConchShip Games, the game’s creators, announced their one million sales milestone in a recent post (written in Chinese) on Steam this week. Daniel Ahmad, an analyst at Niko Partners, tweeted about how he finds that milestone impressive since the game isn’t flashy one with a lot of marketing and is only available in Simplified Chinese. He added that Steam’s rising popularity in China can be attributed to their temporary game approval freeze and Steam being in a “grey area” when it comes to operating in China.

The Scroll of Taiwu isn’t the only Chinese game to see a big surge of support this year. The Chinese life simulator Chinese Parents managed to climb the Steam charts earlier this year by putting players in the role of a growing child trying to meet the high expectations of their parents.

The Scroll of Taiwu is expecting to expand their game by adding an English translation. The game is expected to be in Early Access until late 2019.
