CD Projekt Red, the developers of the Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, have fallen victim to a vicious “targeted cyber attack”. The Polish game developer posted the news to Twitter, along with their statement and the hacker’s ransom note. CD Projekt Red’s statement saying the hackers gained access to their internal network and collected data. According to the company’s statement, “the compromised systems did not contain any personal data of our players or users of our services.”
The company posted a tweet containing their statement and the ransom letter from the hackers. CD Projekt Red explains that they are “taking necessary steps to mitigate the consequences of such a release, in particular by approaching any parties that may be affected due to the breach.” Some of their servers were encrypted by the hackers but the company was able to recover from their backups. Adding insult to injury, the ransom letter (written on the Windows Notepad App) tells employees that they have been “epically pwned”. The suspects also threatened to leak source codes and send documents to their “contacts in gaming journalism.” The hackers end the message by telling the company they have 48 hours to contact them.
CD Projekt Red has had a rough couple of months since its high-anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 release. The company faced major backlash after the game contained game-breaking bugs and offered weak performances on last-gen consoles. Sony even pulled the AAA game from its digital storefront. Since then, CD Projekt Red has been working tirelessly to fix the role-playing game as well as their reputation within the gaming industry.
The studio also announced its decision not to cooperate with the hackers. CD Projekt Red said in its statement that they will not be negotiating with their assailants and have contacted the proper authorities in order to resolve the issue.
