Things could be getting worse for CD Projekt Red. After a poor launch of the highly-anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 on last-gen consoles, they have had to do a lot of explaining. First, they apologized for not showing the game off on Xbox One and PS4 which, if you are not aware, is a very different experience than on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. They have also had to apologize for the poor performance and the slew of bugs and glitches that occur in the game. Then, PlayStation delisted the game from their store and offered refunds. Xbox and Best Buy followed suit and are also offering refunds for the game. Needless to say, it’s not the launch that CD Projekt Red or anyone predicted would happen. Now, things may get worse as investors are looking to possibly sue CD Projekt Red for the misrepresentation of Cyberpunk 2077.
The New York Times reported that “lawyers and investors are circling the situation, contemplating class-action lawsuit against the company.” Mikolaj Orzechowski, a Warsaw attorney, and CDPR investor wrote in a statement: “In connection with the recent events – and in particular the suspension of the sale of the Cyberpunk 2077 product, we are currently analyzing, together with the team of the law firm, the grounds for bringing a class action together with the notification of the possibility of committing an offense under Art. 286 of the Penal Code – misrepresentation in order to obtain financial benefits.”
In-studio, it isn’t any better. Bloomberg reported that the staff of CD Projekt Red are not happy with the Board. There were a lot of questions raised during a company meeting. This took place before Sony announced it would be taking Cyberpunk 2077 off of the PlayStation store. According to Bloomberg, “developers asked blunt questions about the company’s reputation, the game’s unrealistic deadlines, and the relentless overtime in the months and years leading up to the game’s Dec. 10 release.” The staff at CD Projekt Red endured extensive overtime periods which included mandatory six-day weeks in order to finish the game.
The developers have shared that they are working on two big patches that are going to be released in January and February. CD Projekt Red said that together these will fix the most prominent issues that the game has on last-gen consoles. We will learn more about each patch ahead of its release.
