If you use Twitter, you may have noticed that Street Fighter 6 character Juri is trending something fierce. Well, the reason for that would be that a Juri player, Taiwanese player Uma, has won 2024’s Capcom Cup X and is the first official Capcom Cup millionaire, winning an insane prize at the end of a world-spanning fighting game tournament. This win came as a bit of a shock, as Uma was relatively unknown going in to this tournament and Juri was considered to be a bit below the top tiers, but the Feng Shui Engine did its work and the tournament has brought a new millionaire into the world (until taxes).
The tournament has been running for a little over a week, with the Last Chance Qualifiers featured last weekend and the actual tournament taking place over the course of this weekend. While filled with ups and downs in the end it came down to the old reliable God tiers: Luke, Deejay, and Chun-Li with some sprinkling of JPs and Kens taking most of the spots in the tournament. Despite Juri, a relative mid-tier (though opinions on that may change as FGC tier lists shift like water) taking the whole tournament, many would agree that top level play in the game is a bit stale due to the homogenization of the strongest characters. With this in mind its exciting to note that the Ed patch, which was featured at Capcom Cup, seems to not only have the highly anticipated charcter Ed but also some changes to the rest of the roster. While some of the rumors may be untrue, and a lot haven’t been labbed properly, it’s notable that some changes have actual footage to back them up such as Jamie, arguably the worst character in the game, receiving a new command that allows him to take a drink after a front throw. We won’t know the full extent of these changes until the actual patch in a few days, however.
But that’s not the only news to come out of Capcom Cup X. The COO of Capcom himself took the stage at the end of the tournament to announce that the Capcom Pro Tour will begin again this June and that Capcom Cup 11 will again feature a grand prize of one million dollars, to the surprise of everyone watching. So again, this time next year another millionaire will be born (until taxes).
If this sounds appealing to you, maybe you should try your hand at Street Fighter 6? If you want, Street Fighter 6 is available on on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, with a new character, Ed, being available for purchase in just under a few days. Have fun, and congratulations once again to the first Capcom Cup Millionaire Uma!
