Capcom released a trailer showcasing their newest puzzle-based mobile game for 2017 titled Puzzle Fighter, featuring characters from Street Fighter, Megaman, Darkstalkers and more.
Puzzle Fighter allows mobile game enthusiasts to build teams of some of their favorite Capcom characters in an effort to fight other players while solving puzzles. A recently released trailer features characters from many different Capcom games ready to fight each other in a small arena on the phone’s top portion of the screen. On the bottom portion, players solve puzzles by stacking different colored blocks together in order to perform an attack.
Attacks vary depending on which character the player uses, but the game appears to stay true to each character’s signature fighting styles so far; Chun-li fights with her signature fast-paced kicks, while Megaman uses his mega buster to shoot opponents. Puzzle-solving also occurs in “…real-time player-versus-player gameplay on mobile devices, bringing all the action of head-to-head Puzzle Fighter on the go.” Due to this feature, players will most likely have to play the game on a stable WiFi connection when fighting their opponents, but no further information has been released regarding specific details about connection necessities while playing.
The full character roster has not been released, but there will be methods in-game to unlock characters such as Dante and unlock different outfits such as an orange variation of Chun-Li’s Street Fighter II costume. The chibi-like art style of the game distorts a few of the original costumes somewhat but in large part, fans should be able to recognize the designs, especially on the character selection screens.
One employee of Capcom notes “Initially we will be soft launching Puzzle Fighter in select countries soon and the team is working towards a global release planned for late 2017,” so some fans should look forward to testing the game sooner than later. Fans attending PAX West this year also had the chance to play a demo version of the game at Capcom’s booth.
