Since its first release in 2003, Call of Duty has made history as one of the most popular first-person shooter franchises to date. The series’ groundbreaking and consistent success eventually led to the release of Call of Duty: Warzone, a battle royale game, and the subsequent release of Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile in March 2024. The game allows players to play for free and on the go, competing in large-scale battle royales set within the Call of Duty universe. Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile has garnered great deal of popularity, establishing a loyal player base in a considerably short amount of time.
The game’s overall complexity and high-quality level have helped it gain recognition, but achieving these results consistently has proven to be a considerable challenge. Since its launch earlier this year, the game has received criticism for its in-ability to run smoothly on smartphones. The game’s software needs are demanding, to say the least, and this has made running Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile on lower-end smartphone models quite difficult.
Activision, the game’s publisher and developer, announced that they would be revising the game’s minimum device requirements. The details were provided via a post on the official Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile X (formerly Twitter) account. It thanks players for their support and states that the game’s developers have “been heads down working on the latest shared features like Omnimovement and connected content coming with BO6/WZ S1 and beyond plus exciting QOL updates.” These advancements are cited as the main reason for updating the game’s minimum specifications. The post lists the new device requirements and explains that players who are unable to meet these specifications will only be able to play version 3.10 for another six months.
This decision has the potential to generate controversy among Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile players, especially with those who will lose their access to the game entirely. Android users will need a device equipped with a minimum Android 13, while those using iPhones will need devices that have iOS 17, or later versions. Under these new specifications more than 1000 smartphones will fail to meet the performance criteria. This will mainly affect Android users with mid-range Qualcomm and MediaTek GPUs. iPhone users will generally end up better off following the update, with most recent models being compatible with the version of iOS.
Players with newly incompatible devices can continue to play Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile for another six months, provided they installed version 3.1o prior to November 14, 2024. The game is free-to-play and currently available on both the app store and google play store, for any potential players.
