It appears one of the most critically and commercially acclaimed entries in the massive Call of Duty franchise is on its way to current generation consoles. Earlier today, a new rating appeared on the UK’s PEGI rating board’s official website for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered for PlayStation 4. However, all mentions of the game have since been removed from the PEGI website.
While fans can currently play the original Xbox 360 version of the game thanks to backwards compatibility on Xbox One, this will be the first time the game will appear with a full graphical overhaul on modern consoles. If the rating is to be believed, this will be the second entry in the franchise to receive the remaster treatment following the release of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Remastered alongside Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare in 2016. However, unlike the previous remastered game which featured the campaign and ten multiplayer maps, it appears that this version of Modern Warfare 2 will only feature the game’s campaign mode with none of the famous multiplayer modes from the original.
Since the original release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in 2009, Infinity Ward has gone through major changes. The following year, the studio’s co-founders, Vince Zampella and Jason West, would leave the company. They would go on to form Respawn Entertainment and release the Titanfall franchise including the highly successful Apex Legends and are working on Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order.
Infinity Ward would continue making Call of Duty games including Modern Warfare 3, Ghosts, and Infinite Warfare which would all receive mixed to positive reviews, but none would reach the acclaim of Modern Warfare 2. The studio also merged with Neversoft in 2014. The studio should be behind this year’s entry in the series which will see the return of campaign mode after the mode was missing in last year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.
