Brendan Greene Says PUBG 2 Unlikely

There are many who consider PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds the original in the modern battle royale genre. It predates Apex Legends, Call of Duty: Blackout, and even Fortnite, if only just by a few months. While it may have become overshadowed by the others as of late, it still garners hefty player base. Fans of the game may be disappointed to hear that Brendan Greene, the man behind PUBG, doesn’t plan on a sequel.

Greene recently sat down with Gameidustry.biz to talk about the time since the release of PUBG. Now that the game has cemented itself in the genre, and the team at PUBG Corporation has handle on things, Greene decided it was time to move on to other things, what he calls Special Projects. “I have lots of other ideas in my head for games I would like to play and we’re going to see if other people would like to play them too. That’s where we’re at. We haven’t really started anything yet because we’re team building,” Greene says of the new project. While nothing is set in stone, he says that multiplayer is still a large part of his vision and plans to “explore online experiences and how to connect people in ways that we haven’t really done before.”

When asked specifically if a PUBG 2 was in the works, he said, “The last man standing concept is great, but I’ve done that. I don’t really intend to make PUBG 2. I’ve done battle royale, it’s time to try something else.” That “something else” will most likely come from trying different things and seeing what clicks. “Right now it’s just about having time to explore. There is no deadline here, this is us with a few years to play,” says Greene. Whatever Greene and his team choose to work on in the future, it seems as though he’s passionate about the new work and that’s always when something truly special materializes.
