Backward Compatible Titles Can Run Even Better On Xbox Series X|S With FPS Boost

Today, Microsoft and Xbox have announced a new feature for their backward compatible catalog of games that can make them run better than ever. With the power of Xbox Series X|S, all of your existing games look and play better, however, with FPS Boost, the experience can be even better. FPS Boost employs a variety of new methods that can double (and in some cases, quadruple) the original framerate for selected titles. Higher, steadier framerates make games visually smoother, resulting in more immersive gameplay.

Today, the first group of backward compatible titles that support FPS Boost was announced. These games include Far Cry 4, New Super Lucky’s Tale, Sniper Elite 4, and Watch Dogs 2. Paul Eng, Senior Program Manager, Xbox talked about why these games were selected as the first to support FPS Boost. “We chose this initial collection of titles not only because they are popular among fans, but to highlight several different ways that FPS Boost can improve your experience.” Two examples that were given were New Lucky’s Tale can now run up to 120 frames per second and UFC 4 delivers improved framerate performance specifically on Xbox Series S and can now run at 60 fps.

More titles that support FPS Boost will be announced and released soon as new menu icons and system settings will be released in an upcoming system update. Starting this Spring, there will be a “Compatibility Options” button that will allow you to toggle FPS Boost as well as Auto HDR on or off. A new indicator will also be present informing you when a game is running with FPS Boost. Xbox also said that many of the upcoming FPS Boost games will be available in Xbox Game Pass like New Super Lucky’s Tale and Sniper Elite 4. More and more games supporting FPS Boost will be announced in the coming months.
