Arslan: The Warriors of Legend to Release on Steam; New Trailers Showcase Combat and Characters

Koei Tecmo’s Dynasty Warriors has proven itself to be quite the versatile series over the years. Its format – pick your favorite warrior and slice your way through hordes of hapless enemy soldiers – is at once simple and delightfully satisfying. It also easily slots itself into other franchises, as Nintendo’s collaboration project with Koei Tecmo, Hyrule Warriors, has demonstrated on the Wii U. Classic anime seems to be no exception to the rule, and Arslan: The Warriors of Legend intends to prove it.

Arslan was released in Japan in October last year, but will be releasing this February for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One platforms. PC systems will join the fray as well, which was proven when a page for Arslan appeared in Steam’s store yesterday.

In addition, the Steam page reveals a trailer for Arslan that showcases its combat and its anime-inspired visuals:

Koei Tecmo has also released trailers for two characters: the warrior-priestess Farangis, and the traveling bard Gieve.

Included in this announcement, Koei Tecmo has stated that the game will include Free Mode scenarios based on events from Arslan’s manga and novels, which can be unlocked by playing through its main story mode.

Arslan: The Warriors of Legend is based off of a long-running Japanese media franchise titled The Heroic Legend of Arslan, or Arslan Senki in Japan. Arslan began in 1986 as a novel series by Yoshiki Tanaka, who is also known for penning the popular sci-fi space opera novel series Legend of the Galactic Heroes (which itself was later made into a popular manga and anime series). Though Tanaka still writes Arslan novels to this day, the series has been adapted to manga formats by various authors and saw an unfinished home video animation series in the early 90s. Today, Arslan seems to be going through a revival, as The Warriors of Legend and an ongoing animated series demonstrate.

Arslan’s tale takes its themes and setting from a timeless Persian epic called Amir Arsalan-e Namdar. The story takes place after the Crusades and features a Low Fantasy world; no non-human races are present, and magic is wielded by a select few individuals. The star of the saga, Prince Arslan, narrowly escapes his first battle as his home kingdom of Pars is conquered by the neighboring kingdom of Lusitania. Aided by a retinue of battle-hardened friends, Arslan sets off across the land to gather an army that will one day free his homeland of despotism, slavery, and religious fanaticism.

Arslan: The Warriors of Legend is set to release in North America for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on February 9th this year. Europe will be able to purchase the game for the aforementioned platforms on February 12th this year.
